Career Education Corporation's MUSE Learning Platform Earns the Career College Association "2010 Innovative Best Practice/New Program" Award

Interactive learning tool considered "overwhelming choice" by CCA

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., Jun 30, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Career Education Corporation (NASDAQ:CECO), an international provider of post-secondary education programs, received the Career College Association (CCA) 2010 Innovative Best Practice/New Program award for MUSE, or "My Unique Student Experience," an innovative, student-focused course content delivery system.

MUSE, which serves several CEC online campuses and programs, was created by a team led by Judy Komar, CEC vice president of education technology. Komar accepted the recognition on behalf of CEC during the CCA Annual Achievement Awards at the industry association's annual convention in Las Vegas. "CEC schools strive to offer high-quality, supportive education to its students," said Komar. "Through MUSE, our schools are equipped with a powerful learning tool that is not only accessible and intuitive, but assists the student in a way that conforms to individual learning styles."

MUSE is an interactive learning platform that presents supplemental course material through 11 learning options including try it, read it, hear it, view it, create it, direct it and more. These options are designed to accommodate a variety of learning styles, allowing students to interact with curriculum in a way that fits their learning needs. MUSE presents lessons within the context of real-world situations. This format encourages distance learners --who often come to the online classroom with more life and work experience compared to the traditional college student--to use their personal experience and knowledge to guide them to topics they want to focus on. As a result, students engage in a richer, more rewarding learning experience.

"The award selection committee felt MUSE was an overwhelming choice for this award," said Harris Miller, president of CCA. "Education technology will play a big role in the life of the next generation learner, and MUSE demonstrates that career schools are poised to quickly respond and adapt to new learning methods." The CCA Innovative Best Practices/New Program Award recognizes institutions that have contributed to the private, post-secondary career school sector though successful implementation of innovative methods that benefited an institution, student, the career school sector, or the community at-large during the 2009 calendar year. To be considered, nominations must be related to curriculum, instruction, retention, placement or recruitment and show success through innovation. Candidates are evaluated on general factors of success as they related to general best practices or new programs as well as the level of innovation.

First launched in 2009, MUSE is now used by several CEC schools, including: American InterContinental University, Colorado Technical University, International Academy of Design & Technology, Missouri College and Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts North America.
